| Course Description |
Course
content is devided under two major components. The first (roughly
30%) deals with the introduction to basic concepts and principles
of plant physiology and covers topics on plant cell, plant water relations
(water uptake and transport), nutrient uptake and transport, photosynthesis,
respiration, plant hormones, plant responses to production environments,
environmental control of flowering (manipulation of flowering time
and vernalization in temperate biennials). The second component (roughly
70%)will discuss physiological aspects of seed development (including
floral development, pollination, fertilization), seed maturation (acquisition
of desiccation tolerance), vigor, longevity and storage, dormancy,
germination, seed enhancement techniques (priming) and interactions
with chemical seed treatments (fungicides, insecticides).
